The report indicates nearly 40% of smokers are able to quit after just 90 days thanks to vaping
Despite the years of dedicated efforts from anti-tobacco organizations, smoking remains the leading cause of preventable death and disease across the country and globe. That being said, we have taken several significant strides forward over the last 30 years, and smoking rates in most places are at or approaching all-time lows. But until the day we live in a world virtually free of smoking, we still require new and effective ways to help smokers end their dependence once and for all.
As such, we have plenty of different options available to smokers looking to quit, ranging from nicotine patches and gum to even prescription drugs. But one of the newest smoking cessation methods is vaping nicotine e-liquids. While vaporizers are still relatively new and mysterious, there is a growing pile of evidence indicating they’re the best smoking cessation aid we have. The latest of these studies was published last week in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health and concluded that vaping helps about 37% of smokers quit after only 90 days.
The Latest Report
The study was conducted by researchers with the Centre for Substance Use Research in the UK. Led by Dr. Neil McKeganey, the team wanted to understand what effect vaping had on smoking cessation, as well as the number of cigarettes smoked, over an extended period of time. The team was also interested in learning about the effect of e-liquid flavors on the smoking cessation ability of vaping. The study was funded by Fontem Ventures, owner of the Blu brand of cig-a-likes, but they were legally barred from being involved in the research and publishing process in any way. 72 participants were chosen and asked to track their smoking and vaping habits so they could answer relevant questions at monthly check-ins with the research team.
Likely the most significant finding of the study is that nearly 40% of smokers were able to entirely quit smoking by the 90-day check-in, but that wasn’t the end of it. Even among the smokers who were unable to stop entirely, the intake of cigarettes dropped significantly from 14.4 per day down to just 3.2. Also declining was the frequency of daily smoking, which fell all the way from 88.7% to only 17.5%. Summing up the results was Dr. McKeganey when he said, “On the basis of these results, there may be value in smoking cessation services and other services ensuring that smokers are provided with e-cigarettes at zero or minimal costs for at least a short period of time.” He also felt that the ongoing probes into e-liquid flavors would be detrimental if they result in a widespread ban.
Further Evidence On Smoking Cessation Value
While this is the latest study to indicate the smoking cessation value of vaping, it certainly isn’t the only one. One of the most game-changing was conducted by researchers at the University of Louisville last fall. The team set out to compare the effectiveness of different smoking cessation tools and methods, ranging from cold turkey through prescription drugs. After collecting and analyzing their results, the team concluded that not only is vaping a useful smoking cessation tool, but it’s the most effective we currently have, even beating out prescription aids.
Another study on the subject was conducted by a team of researchers from Rutgers and Columbia Universities. This large-scale study looked at over 15,000 cases before determining that around 52% of daily vapers eventually fully end their dependence on tobacco. They also found that vapers are about three times less likely to pick smoking back up than someone who quit using another method. These results bolster what the latest study found, that vaping is an extremely effective tool in the fight against tobacco.
As long as smoking-related deaths remain so absurdly high, we will always need new and effective ways to help smokers quit. Given the growing mountain of evidence pointing to the massive harm reduction and smoking cessation value of vaping, you’d think that public health officials would be throwing their full support behind it. As we all know, this is far from the case, with most legislators much more apt to place harsh regulations on vaping than help it flourish. But with smoking still causing so much preventable death and disease, we need to be using every tool we have.
That’s why it’s so crucial for the change to start with us. We must work to spread the real facts on vaping with our friends and loved ones who may need to hear it. Polls have shown that only around 13% of adults currently understand that vaping is at least 95% safer than smoking, with double that amount thinking vaping may be even more dangerous. If we are ever going to start changing the minds of policymakers, we must begin with educating our friends and neighbors.
