Researchers have proven once again that e-cigarettes are much safer than continued smoking.

It can be easy to forget, but modern vaping has only really existed for a little over 15 years now. In fact, it’s only been over the last ten years that vaping has really grown into an influential industry all its own.

Despite the growing pile of peer-reviewed evidence proving the harm reduction and smoking cessation value of vaping, most politicians remain skeptical of their broader impact. As such, most places have opted for restrictive policies which treat vaping and smoking as essentially the same.

However, we recently got yet another report which proves a clear and distinct harm reduction value of e-cigarettes. Dr. Riccardo Polosa is well known around the vaping community for providing some of the best evidence in support of e-cigarettes, and this latest report is no exception.

The news received mixed reactions from the public, mostly along the vaping debate line. Advocates celebrate the added proof of vaping’s value, while skeptics continue to push a false narrative about teenage usage.

Latest Research

The researchers, led by Dr. Polosa, wanted to better understand the impact of vaping on the lungs and airways, especially in comparison to tobacco smoke. They also spent a large portion of their review looking into false claims about the dangers of e-cigarettes, especially in relation to animal studies.

The team highlighted a common problem among researchers to avoid directly comparing the impact of vaping with the effects of smoking. Their findings suggest this type of policy is directly leading fewer people to understand the differences between vaping and smoking, or why it would benefit them to switch.

One significant gripe the team had with many animal studies of vaping involves the differences in biometric reactions between humans and animals. Especially in regards to oxidative stress, Dr. Polosa and his team firmly believe only human test subjects can produce the necessary relevant information.

In fact, the team highlighted several ways in which vaping has repeatedly been shown to improve respiratory health in humans after they quit smoking. These included reduced cough and congestion, as well as improvement of asthma or COPD symptoms. They even went as far as to say no human-based trials have shown the risk of vaping is anywhere near that of smoking.

Why Choose Vaping

This latest report makes a strong case that vaping should be supported for all its harm reduction and smoking cessation benefits. In spite of this, many people still don’t fully understand why e-cigarettes are such a better choice.

Research going back to at least 2015 indicates vaping is at least 95% safer than continued smoking. This wasn’t a one-off finding either, as several reports have reached similar conclusions, including a report out of Roswell Park which found toxicants in vapor are 93% higher than in cigarette smoke.

Even more impressively, a report out of the Journal of Aerosol Sciences concluded the excess lifetime cancer risk of a smoker is about 57,000 times higher than a demographically similar vaper. This, coupled with reports proving the smoking cessation value of vaping, and it starts to become clear why so many think this is a critical fight.

We even have proof that the so-called teenage vaping “epidemic” is being overblown by the media. A report of over 60,000 teens concluded less than 0.5% of non-smoking students are ever vaping more than once or twice.

Implications

It’s always great to see relevant and thorough research which supports vaping. Despite what legislators and media outlets would have you believe, vaping has been one of the best things to happen to public health in a very long time.

Vaping has played an integral role in the continued decline of smoking, as it provided a new and effective way for smokers to quit. This has been especially true for those who had tried quitting multiple times in the past.

But now we find ourselves at a crossroads. If we don’t want to wake up in a world where the vaping industry is merely a shell of its former self, we simply must get out there and support the cause. While many might not want to get involved, the alternative could be costly.

What do you think about the recent study? Is it vital for us to get more research like this? What’s the best way we can fight back against misguided information.
